We listened to your feedback, dug into the data, and are excited to reveal the updated scoring matrix for the 2022–2023 season. On Tuesday, August 26 (Game Week 300), these updates will go live, giving Managers one month to study their teams, review their transfer targets, and adapt their strategies where needed. We are committed to reviewing the scoring system each summer and will continue to improve and create the best game experience possible.

We have updated the scoring matrix to:

  • Improve the scoring system to more accurately reflect real-life player performance
  • Fix the imbalance between centre-back and full-back scores
  • Update goalkeeper scores to accurately reflect real-life performance

With these changes we also aim to:

  • Have similar score distributions across all positions
  • Not meaningfully impact current score averages (95% of players new scores will be in a +/- 2 point range of their current scores)
  • Have no single stat in the all-around score contribute to the majority of the score

An overview of the main changes:

Decisive score

We received feedback on decisive scores:

  • It is questionable the way negative decisive actions were scored
  • It is contradictory to stack positive decisive actions, but not negative actions. For example, a player getting a red card and conceding a penalty could still have a chance to score a decent score

The updated scoring matrix will now stack and add two negative levels.

Example 1: A player that conceded 1 penalty and receives a red card will end up on level -2 (5 points).

Example 2: A player that concedes 2 penalties and receives a red card will end up on level -3 (0 points)

Goalkeepers

We received feedback on goalkeeper scores:

  • Goalkeepers are penalized when they lose possession, but not rewarded for accurate passes
  • Goalkeepers are not penalized enough when they concede goals, particularly when they concede more than 3 goals
  • It’s difficult for goalkeepers to reach very high scores (80+)

The updated scoring matrix will:

  • Reward accurate passes (0.1pt) and successful final third passes (0.5pt)
  • Penalize 3 points for each conceded goals. Conceding 3 goals will remain a negative decisive score.
  • Increase points for goalkeeping actions (saves inside the box, good high claim, punches)

Full details are below:

Defenders:

We received feedback on defender scoring:

  • Full-backs get lower scores than centre-backs
  • Lost possessions are too strongly penalized
  • Conceded goals are not impacting defenders scores enough
  • Defenders get too many points by performing a lot of easy accurate passes during a game

The updated scoring matrix will:

  • Reduce the penalty of possession lost from 1pt to 0.6pt
  • Reduce the bonus of accurate passes from 0.1pt to 0.08pt, and successful final third passes from 0.5pt to 0.4pt
  • Increase the penalty for a conceded goal from 2pts to 4pts
  • Increase the bonus of attempted assists from 2pts to 3pts

These changes will help bridge the overall scoring gap between centre-backs and full-backs.

Midfielders & Forwards

We received feedback on midfielders & forwards:

  • A slight imbalance between defensive midfielders and offensive midfielders, as defensive actions were not rewarded enough
  • A slight imbalance between wingers and strikers, as wingers score fewer decisive scores than strikers

We made slight changes to answer these concerns:

  • Increase the bonus for interceptions won (from 2 to 3) and duels (from 0.5 to 0.8)

Impact

We carefully tested these changes to make sure they fix possible scoring imbalances without creating new ones. One of the main focuses was to monitor the impact on the average score of players and limit big variations. For midfielders and forwards, the scoring changes will have a marginal impact on scores. The impact will be bigger for goalkeepers and defenders and we believe this is the right decision for healthy, long-term gameplay.

We understand that these changes may impact your strategies and we want to give Managers ample time to plan and adapt. We will be rolling out this updated scoring matrix for Game Week 300 starting on August 26th. Please continue to share your feedback on our scoring model. We will commit to improving the model year over year. Thanks to your knowledge and feedback, we can build the most comprehensive scoring matrix in fantasy football!
