Thanks to everyone who came out for the very first URBAN-X demo day at Hudson Mercantile yesterday!

Nine great urban tech startups pitched to a packed house of over 200 investors, mentors, founders, city officials, and urban innovators. Demos were given. Hydroponically-grown vegetables were tasted. Brain waves were monitored. Scooters were ridden. Pedestrians were counted. We were also fortunate to have an inspiring keynote delivered by former NYC Chief Urban Designer (and current founding director at CRUX) Alex Washburn, which made the afternoon extra special. Thanks Alex!

It was a good day, spent with a room full of people who really truly care about what the future of cities looks like. We are sincerely thankful to be part of such an awesome community.

With demo day now in their rear view, the UBX 01 teams will be working harder than ever. After another week with us in New York, many of them will be headed on to Munich and/or Shenzhen, to spend some time with the MINI and HAX teams abroad. Ultimately some of the companies that came to us from afar will be relocating to NYC, or establishing a part-time presence here. We’re excited to keep them close, but regardless of where in the world they are, we’ll continue to work with them to help make their visions a success.

At the same time, we’ll also be looking out for great companies for our next cohort. Our second program will kick off a little later than initially expected, in October, in order to spend the summer doing some exciting things (stay tuned!) and preparing our swanky new makerspace at A/D/O in Brooklyn. However, we’ll begin considering applicants early, so please get in touch with us if you’re working on great hardware, connected devices, or IoT applications for cities. It’s never too early to apply, but don’t be late; the new deadline for applications is September 6th. We hope to hear from you soon.
