Want A Different Result? Check Your Process

Change = Different (Input x Process)

If you want to change the output you’re getting, you need to closely evaluate two things: your input and your process.

It’s sometimes said same input = same outcome; that’s only half true. The process is often an overlooked component. If you’re giving maximum effort, but keep getting unsatisfactory results it’s likely your process that’s the problem.

For example, if you lift weights for hours but have awful form, you’ll end up with more aches, pains and injuries than results. If you’re driving from Cleveland to California using a roadmap of Canada; starting from Cleveland is not the problem. The map is wrong. If you change your starting location to Chicago, but use the same map, you still won’t get the desired outcome. You will still be confused and lost. In this case different input = same outcome because the process (the map) is wrong.

Continuing with the same input and process, but expecting a different outcome is insanity. You can’t get a different result if nothing changes.

If you’re stuck right now and you don’t like the results you’re getting, first evaluate your input and then switch your process. The problem may not be the effort you’re putting in, it may be how you’re going about it. By all means pay attention to the input; but, while doing it, don’t undervalue the process.
