Movies have been a means of escaping reality for some time now. Belonging to the arts more generally, their effect is no less powerful than that of paintings, sculptures or poetry.
The filmmaker takes on the role of the artist, and their film becomes a canvas-in-motion through which they wish to present their perspective of the world. While no objective truth can be achieved, the filmmaker, much like the artist, attempts to generate meaning from a subjective version of truth.
Not all movies will possess meaning that engages with everyone, because each one of us has their own version of what the truth may entail.
Still, our curiosity is never satisfied. We are constantly on the hunt for something that will give us a deeper insight into a thought or feeling that we already have, and that is what makes the filmmaker’s mission come to life.
Without delaying you much longer, here are a few films that I have found do just that; elevating you from a widely accepted notion of reality and offering a glimpse into what may be possible out there — a possibility that never stops occupying us, whether we’re conscious of it or not.
