How to Honor Your Spiritual Essence

It’s no secret to anyone that physical life is a big challenge. No matter what you have achieved or not achieved, no matter who you are, there is always anxiety.

In the late 70s, English spiritual guru Alan Watts wrote in his book The Wisdom of Anxiety that anxiety might cause stress, but it also causes us to act. Yet when stress becomes too much, what do we do? Moreover, why does it seem like such a challenge to do it?

After all, our true spiritual essence can express unconditional love and exist in a state of bliss and happiness; we are not subjected to the lower emotions of anger, grief, hatred, etcetera when we live without a body.

When we do not have the burden of physical survival, we love everyone and everything. So why is it so hard to find these utopian states in daily life?

For one thing, life is a considerable effort. We must overcome physical inertia. We have a body to carry around, so we must get up and do something. We must find our why and what, form relationships, and many other things that seem hard.

Our main aim is to feel ok and to move forward. We don’t do this alone, however; when we exist physically, our spirit acts as our guide; there is a unique energetic identity out there in the universe and together with the part that exists in our body, is working to help us see out our journey.

We certainly need guidance — we live in a world of competition and strife, and we should do our best not to immerse ourselves in it.

How can you do this? You can feel and embody the energy of happiness. I find the best ways to do this are as follows:

1. Hang out with people you energetically connect with

It is helpful if you and the other person have a different or nuanced point of view because this creates the spark.

From a scientific viewpoint, the universal law of thermodynamics teaches us that contrast is good because this variation — the so-called spice of life — is what gives us the motivation to expend energy. Sameness is boring and social networks that bring nothing new to the table find it more challenging to move forward. Cultural difference is therefore desirable even though it can be hard to maintain.

2. Get enough sleep

You are a physical organism, and you need to recharge your batteries. Even the energy at the cell level in your body needs rest.

3. Meditate

When you wake up from a dream state, your mental energy moves from a Delta state to an Alpha state. Your energy picks up because you need it for the physical world. When your day is in full swing, you are generating Beta energy, the busy mental state you use to function.

When you meditate, you are resetting your mental state to Theta energy, the state that enhances intuition and creativity. It is also associated with having spiritual connections and can leave you with indescribably happy sensations of well-being.

4. Be kind to yourself

We live in a busy world where Google is just a click away. There is too much information. People harbor various views of our world, only some of which are accurate and true. Find your sites. Choose those web pages well because not only do people have weird opinions, but everyone finds some way of repeating the same opinions as everybody else.

For example, the war in Ukraine is terrible — yet every news site must weigh in on the matter. Just ignore this nonsense. As unfortunate as it is and as much as we feel for the people affected, don’t let journalists bombard you. Please don’t feel obliged to read their opinion.

5. Eat right

Our body is a vessel where our spirit spends a few decades. Therefore, you must treat it right. Having physical energy means that your spirit can express its energy in a fuller way. What you eat need not be expensive. You do not need to prepare something to stop Gordon Ramsay from swearing like a trooper.

You do not need to spend hours making it either — so that Jamie Oliver gushes over you like a puppy dog.

6. Exercise

I am not suggesting you become an exercise fanatic, getting up at 4 am and cycling 40 miles in near-zero temperatures. However, daily brisk walks and paddling in the ocean will catalyze a chemical called endorphins, creating a sense of well-being.

Conclusion

Your environment is more powerful than your will. Hang around with people that make you feel good. If someone gets some a charge by positioning themselves as a victim — even if it is your parents — subject yourselves to their stuff less.

I am not advising you to ignore your parents; however, you can enlighten them about the fact that you were born in year X, and they were born in year Y.

You can help them further by advising them that you have spent much of your life shedding their negative beliefs and do not want to take on their ego construct.

Furthermore, you can aim to work with people you like rather than those that drain your energy.

Alleviate the stress and anxiety of life through meditation and reaching out to people you love and who love you. Get a dog, whether through an animal shelter or professional breeders.

You can surmount the challenge of life with insight and the willingness to change.
