APRIL PROMPT 12 — CHILD STORY SERIES -AMAR CHITRA KATHA / ACK
The Childhood Series That Is Cherished …
AMAR CHITRA KATHA
Amar = Evergreen / Everlasting
Chitra Katha = Picture Story
So the eternal significance of mythology and history of Indian Culture has been depicted in the most simplified manner through Amar Chitra Katha Series. I owe my knowledge and Interest in Indian Culture full of Colorful Stories to My Mother who flawlessly told to me these stories and to the Amar Chitra Katha Series, who made me visualize these stories, by the unique style of Illustration that has deeply been imprinted in my mind.
Not Me Only… But millions of Kids in India….!!!!!
“While comic books are a western concept, we have adopted it and made it in our own illustrations. We have used it to simplify long epics with complex storylines into a mere 32 pages. It is an art in itself. We pay attention to words that children would be familiar with and create a balance between the old and the new to give each character a unique tone,” Niranjana Sivarama, the junior editor at Amar Chitra Katha.
Why is Amar Chitra Katha Unique???
At Amar Chitra Katha, stories aren’t created, only retold. Each comic is extensively researched and the sentiments of people are kept in mind .
Famous historians are consulted before each story is finalized and drafted. Along with the technical aspect, the emotional aspect of how a book might shape a child’s mind is given importance.
Reading time is precious family time. A time that is spent with a loving parent and one that stays in the memory for life. Such memories build self-confidence, give security and create a strong foundation for future development. Anant Pai used the comics format because he knew that even a child who does not like reading would pick up a comic because of its pictures.
ACK is said to have about 450 comics in 35+ languages, which have sold more than 100 million copies to date. Of these 450 titles, stories from the Mahabharata account for 43 titles and those from Ramayana for 36. The variety of subjects on offer has only increased over the years, as the creators reach out to all corners of India for stories and biographies.
