Poverty can be a blessing in disguise. It forced me to be creative making my own toys. Cloth and paper dolls. Trucks and cars are made from juice boxes, and metal bottle tops for wheels. Being shy, reading was a second life and hope for me. A road paved with knowledge that I need like plants need water and sunlight. We didn’t have a television set, so books opened my heart, soul, mind, imagination, thoughts, and eyes to a new and exciting world I wanted to be a part of.
A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford is still in my heart and head more than forty years after reading it. I remembered my mother sending me to purchase something at the shop and I walked and read walking into a light pole. My forehead hurts for days. But I just could not put that 816-page book down.
