The human mind can be a strange labyrinth. Most of us are on an endless path of self-discovery, and the reasons are quite simple. Every new experience tells us something new about ourselves. Probably, this path of self-discovery could be one of the true meanings of life. The more you know about yourself, the better the chance to make decisions that enhance your well-being and happiness.

It may be simple on paper but a true challenge in real life. There are many things we must face to truly start a life of rapid self-discovery.

Firstly, the human brain is quite tricky. We have a tendency to be highly adaptable, which brings both benefits and misfortunes. We can easily thrive in new environments after learning a thing or two, but we also get used to things quickly. For example, a raise at work might be a great reason for celebration at first, but after a while, we get used to it and see it as something of no importance. The worst part is that this quick adaptability makes us see more problems over time. A human spirit without a step forward is doomed to seek non-existent problems. Sometimes, because of this skill, we get stuck.

I know it may sound quite strange, but finding problems is a way of keeping the human mind at peace. As a species, we are extremely ambitious. Just look at all our discoveries and our influence on the planet. This reflects great ambition. We have a natural drive to do things and take action. But what happens to our ego if we are not doing anything? Extreme disappointment in ourselves. And when you feel terrible about yourself, the natural response is to blame somebody else. So, in seeking peace with ourselves, we feel the need to discover problems, even if they are non-existent. And this is where we excel in modern society. All these ideologies and demagoguery, especially during times of political conflict, are a testament to this. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about political parties or public declarations of sexuality; sometimes we just need the thrill of facing a problem to give our egos a break.

This phenomenon seems universal. You, me, all the people we love, and everyone around us are choosing to play in the labyrinth of our minds. The big question is whether this is necessary. For false problems, the only purpose is to protect our egos. But what about facing something truly challenging? Most likely, it involves actively seeking and doing things by our own good will. We could say it involves actively stretching our comfort zones. Although this sounds quite difficult, it is the only way to feed our ambition with something nutritious and sustaining. Otherwise, it will just devour everything around us and lead to a truly miserable life.

Being human has many challenges, and the worst or best part is that it is completely in our hands. We have great ambition naturally, and it usually manifests itself through the desire to be great or never forgotten. But to achieve that, we must put ourselves in situations that force us to grow, similar to chosen suffering for the greater good. Human ambition has no boundaries, and in moments of true starvation, it will not spare us or the ones we hold dear.
