Death of a Red Supergiant

a poem for a dying star

Betelgeuse is fading
on Orion’s shoulder —

he’s been dimming for months,
too close to the earth
for astronomers to view

their immense lenses
are scarred by his brilliance,
an afterimage left burning
on delicate sensors

so science is seeking
amateur astronomers
to monitor the aging star.

I imagine hordes
of backyard telescopes
turning toward the skies
in unison, peering
at the elder giant

keeping vigil
on the horizon,
whispering last rites
into the midnight sky,

every eye anticipating
a supernova.
