Monthly Geomancy for November 2019
November is here and it’s time again to look at the geomancy influences for each week. As always, the chart is read from right to left beginning with Conjunctio in the upper right box. The structure of the chart lends itself well for a weekly format with the first and second rows comprising each week with three geomantic runes per week.
Building the Shield Chart
The divination process involves casting four foundation runes to create the first four geomancy runes of the shield chart. Each foundation rune has one dot on one side and two dots on the reverse with an elemental symbol assigned to each one. After casting the initial four foundation runes, they’re placed in a vertical order of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth with the resulting rune then entered in the first box of the shield chart. The process is repeated three additional times to create the remainder of the first four geomancy runes of the chart.
From there, the remainder of the first row is derived from each line of the runes contained in the first four boxes. A close look at the chart below shows that the first line creates the rune in the fifth box, the second line creates the rune in box six, and so forth.
But when the second row is created, we use a different process. We’re not simply transferring existing dots to create the next rune. Instead, we’re combining dots together and if an even number is reached, then we enter two dots on that elemental line of the new rune. If an odd number is reached, then a single dot is entered.
So, the first two runes from row one create the ninth rune below them in row two, runes three and four create the rune below them (ten), etc. until both rows are filled. The Right and Left Witnesses are derived in the same manner and we combine them together to discover the Judge or Outcome of the reading.
So let’s look at each week followed by an overall outlook created by the final three geomancy symbols. Taphthartharath occupies the planetary spirit position defined by the first geomantic glyph, Conjunctio, and its sigil appears in the lower outcome box of the shield chart below.
Week One
- Conjunctio — joining together, Air Element, Mercury in Virgo
- Tristitia — sadness, grief, evil influence, Earth Element, Saturn in Aquarius
- Caput Draconis — beginnings, Dragon’s Head, Earth Element, North Node in Capricorn
The first week of November indicates new beginnings but may have its origins in the perception of loss suggested by Tristitia. However, Conjunctio’s joining together suggests unity is possible and the challenge really is in our ability to understand the perspective of others. Tolerance and an open mind are favored especially during this time of Mercury retrograde.
Week Two
- Conjunctio — joining together, Air Element, Mercury in Virgo
- Carcer — imprisonment, evil influence, Earth Element, Saturn in Capricorn
- Via — path, journey, way, Water Element, Moon in Leo
The geomancy runes are interesting this week given that Conjunctio and Carcer are each other’s complement. Feelings of self-imprisonment versus unity with others appear to foster a new direction or path. In other words, we may experience conflict between resistance and allowing this week. As Carcer is governed by Saturn in Capricorn, this suggests that we’re torn between work and play. So, if possible, make room for both.
Week Three
- Tristitia — sadness, grief, evil influence, Earth Element, Saturn in Aquarius
- Amissio — loss, Earth Element, Venus in Taurus
- Puella — fortunate, young girl, erratic, Air Element, Venus in Libra
Although Mercury ends its retrograde on Tuesday, there still may be some difficulty this week understanding others. Venus in both Taurus (Amissio) and Libra (Puella) suggests interactions could be affected by behavior that is erratic and impulsive fostering frustration and concern from others. Tristitia’s feelings of sadness and grief may surround a lack of focus or boundaries, particularly if frustrations arise; however, this should clear up by the end of the week if we stay vigilant.
Week Four
- Amissio — loss, Earth Element, Venus in Taurus
- Acquisitio — gain, profit, Air Element, Jupiter in Aries
- Via — path, journey, way, Water Element, Moon in Leo
The same interesting pattern occurs in week four as experienced in week two with two geomantic complements again creating a new direction or path forward. As with Conjunctio and Carcer, Amissio and Acquisitio (loss and gain) are each other’s complement influences, one somewhat restrictive, and the other expansive.
However, with Acquisitio’s influence of Jupiter in Aries, dynamic energy exists that we can build on if we let go of feelings of loss experienced with Amissio. Besides, it may actually have more to do with Taurean stubbornness than anything else. And with Leo’s influence on our direction forward, that may be enough to overshadow any resistance we might feel this week. Thanksgiving is on Thursday. Share a meal with friends and family and allow for a new path forward.
Right and Left Witnesses and the Judge
- Right Witness — Laetitia — joy, gladness, Air Element, Jupiter in Taurus
- Left Witness — Rubeus — passion, evil, Water Element, Mars in Scorpio
- Judge (Outcome) — Fortuna Minor — lesser fortune, Fire Element, Sun in Taurus
The Right and Left Witnesses can represent anything a geomancer wishes, but I like to use them as the underlying basis for the Judge or outcome. If we still can’t arrive a clear understanding of the reading, then we can create a reconciler from the Judge and the rune in box one. If we did that, we’d arrive at Amissio, or loss of something of a practical, Earth-oriented nature.
Laetitia occupies the position of Right Witness suggesting joy and a focus on harmony and positive thinking while Rubeus as the Left Witness challenges us to be self-disciplined. We find Fortuna Minor in the Judge or outcome position suggesting lesser fortune, but it still represents a gain of some kind or at least progress in some area.
It seems likely that understanding and empathy toward others may prove challenging this month; however, if we drop resistance, i.e. stubbornness, the opportunity exists for healing. Perhaps this month signals a new direction in our relationships with others, one where boundaries are respected and all voices are heard.
Until next month…
Blessed Be!
