Oncoming Traffic

The noise is supposed to tell you
where you should be
Your curb deepens
sidewalk somehow a map
a whole bloody atlas away
Somehow
the step is only a step
towards another
& repetition scales away the meaning
as origin becomes
less important
The noise you hear now
is your heart’s
piercing rhythm through your neck
& you’ve beat it again
though it doesn’t know why

It barely
understands why
