Peace Is Your Birthright

Peace is that moment of calm when every muscle in your body is relaxed and you feel the space between your joints. There is a new clarity in the leaves on a tree, the curve of your loved one’s face, the decision you’ve been debating for days.

It’s that state of mind when you find yourself really listening to another person’s words — their spoken and unspoken messages — without the urge to interrupt or argue or pile on.

It’s an appreciation of the present moment, which is also timeless (because it’s always the present moment).

Often this moment happens during a massage, on vacation, after meditating, etc. Rarely does this seem to happen in our day-to-day lives, when we’re busy with work and bills and doctor appointments and all the little moments of duty and chaos that add up to the life we want a vacation from.

It’s easy to believe that peace is predicated on our external situation.

However, peace is an internal state of being, and it’s always there. It’s just that if you don’t visit often, it’s easy to forget the way. But when you drive somewhere daily, you no longer need a map and you often arrive in a flash.

Peace takes practice.

Imagine quiet, steady waves lapping at the shore of a small lake. Now imagine the waves suddenly growing loud…
