Brands have personalities. Great brands have well refined and fully defined personalities, like Glossier and Nike. Not so great brands have half-defined personalities. Terrible brands don’t have defined personalities at all. Choosing not to define your brand's personality is a terrible decision. If you don’t define your personality, the public will.

A well-defined brand personality has benefits:

  • You’ll be more relatable and approachable
  • Your team and contractors become in sync
  • Marketing, packaging, design becomes easier
  • Overall decisions get made with confidence

Joey from Friends has a very well defined personality.

Joey From Friends

The actor, the writers, the costume designer, hairstylist, and director have easier jobs when they fully understand the character's personality. The viewer also finds it easier to relate to, understand and like Joey, as well as recommend him to friends. Heck, we can likely predict Joey’s next joke.

Glossier has a well-defined personality.

The CEO, the comms manager, packaging designer, site developer, product photographer and general manager have easier jobs when they fully understand the brand’s personality. The customers also find it easier to relate to, understand and like Glossier, as well as recommend them to friends. Heck, we can likely predict Glossier’s next tweet.

Define Your Brand in a GIF

This is a fun starting point for building a personality for your brand. Head to GIPHY and find the perfect GIF to personify your product or brand.

We’re building an app that helps you sound off about your day. To define our brand, we started by defining what sounding off feels like. These are the two GIFS we chose.

P.S it often helps if your brand’s personality reflects your customer’s idols.

Go on then, show off your favourite GIF?

Send it over to us on Twitter here.

We’re building a voice journal app, follow us: co-founders Elly, Paavan, & Rory post on the Sound Off publication every week.
