2 Fat Guys Grilled Cheese is a favorite of Chelsea’s, one of the many ASU students out at the Friday Food Trucks.

Every Friday afternoon, ASU’s Downtown Campus is full of different food trucks. They’re down past the Walter Cronkite building and the spacious park, nestled behind the AE Building like buried treasure — only this treasure brings with it delicious smells of all different kinds of foods.

To some, like senior Nikole Tower, the main draw is the spontaneity.

Another popular food truck served waffles with whipped cream and fruits — perfect for a picture.

For others, like Chelsea, it’s a favorite item — grilled cheese — that keeps them coming back.

Other students, like Mckayla Hull, are less interested in the food trucks. Because she never was taken to food trucks as a kid, she said the idea of eating food out of a truck seemed a little gross, although the unique options available at ASU intrigued her.

While this was Mckayla’s first time checking out Food Truck Friday, another newcomer, Gabrielle, was excited to try a new meal. She stood by the Cambodian Food Truck near a worker who told us he’s been all around the valley, waiting for her food and excited to see what food from Cambodia is like.

Que Sazon is a black Columbian food truck with social media information written on the truck.

Que Sazon, a Columbian food truck, has carnitas, empanadas, and many other South American food styles.

It was started just a few years ago by a Columbian man and his American wife. Lenny, the wife’s father, works with the family and says he loves the food they offer. The back of Lenny’s shirt says, “If you can’t go to South America, we’ll bring it to you.”

He spoke with us about how this new food truck started. Although Lenny’s in his 70’s, he told us he has ridden his bike from Scottsdale down to ASU. Food like the meals at Que Sazon helps to keep him young, he says.

Another worker, with New Fire Truck Grill, was excited to show off his meals to a group full of journalism students, speaking in a booming voice about all of the freshly-grilled burgers he makes every day.

Although burgers are their greatest draw, his personal favorite is either the carnitas or the fish tacos they offer.

There’s always a new combination of food trucks on Fridays at ASU Downtown.

People from all walks of life can meet up behind the AE Building, right across from the post office.
