Michael Kugelman, “To Ease Pakistan Violence, Turn on the Lights” (Bloomberg): An argument for seriously considering solving Pakistan’s energy crisis as a key to stabilizing the country writ-large. There is also a role for the U.S. to play here, which does provide (modest) aid for power generation.

Mohammed Hanif, “Looking for Uncle Ali” (Tanqeed): Deep dive into one search for a disappeared Baloch man by his nephew. All of the usual members of the Pakistani security establishment are connected to a long record of extra-judicial actions in Baloch province. Key quote: “ There are thousands missing if you believe the Baloch Nationalists, hundreds according to the human rights organisations and none according to our intelligence agencies.”

Gardiner Harris, “Homesick Militants are Offered a Way Back to Kashmir” (New York Times): Discussion of an Indian program to allow former Kashmiri militants who left to train in Pakistan to return to their families in Indian-administered Kashmir. Often the former militants believe they have more of a future in India as opposed to Pakistan, and the Indian security services believe its safer to try to monitor them inside Kashmir.
