Best Way to #InspireGood!

Thank You Community Foundation of Elkhart County.

Thanks to the support of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, our coding program in Elkhart has the opportunity to help even more kids and teens with the addition of more full and partial scholarships to our program’s participants and additional equipment to support our Elkhart location starting this Fall!

South Bend Code School // Elkhart launched in 2018 as an after-school coding program for ages 7–18. Kids and teens learn tech skills in Python, 3D Game Development, Scratch Coding, Web Development, and more.

It has been widely known for some time that there is a large problem in our growing technology skills gap. The number of job openings in the US that require computer science skills far outweighs the number of available workers to fill those positions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in STEM occupations will continue to increase 8.8% by 2028.

We greatly appreciate the partnerships that have grown since our time in Elkhart. South Bend Code School // Elkhart has been operating out of ETHOS Innovation Center since our program’s inception. Our two organizations align well in our missions to encourage kids and teens to learn how to apply the future today by encouraging technology and hands-on computer science. We are also incredibly grateful for the support that we received through the Elkhart & South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce through the Skill UP Initiative. These funds have been used in South Bend & Elkhart to provide scholarships to students participating in our programming.

South Bend Code School // Elkhart is currently the only program in the South Bend — Elkhart Region teaching computer science in an after-school setting. As we continue to grow our program throughout the Midwest, SB Code School // Elkhart’s goal is to continue strengthening our program through increased scholarship dollars and by growing our curriculum.

Since South Bend Code School’s launch in 2015, we have opened four locations throughout Indiana (South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, & Bloomington) and have plans for opening a fifth site in Michigan this fall. We’ve partnered with two schools in Indiana and Michigan to provide computer science education (The Montessori Academy at Edison Lakes & Niles Community School Corp). We have worked with over 1,000 students (39% underrepresented & 34% female) since our inception.
