Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, and illustration.

We see graphic design everywhere we look from brands on appliances to street signs, and our favorite books. Graphic design is a way of looking at the world and communicating ideas in fresh yet familiar ways.

Graphic design blends together with coding seamlessly. We teach our students the elements of what makes a great design so that they can integrate it into their own projects.

That’s easy to say on the surface. What does it look like when a teen signs up to learn graphic design?

Participants create their own digital portfolios on an industry standard platform called Behance. We also introduce key concepts of graphic design, including color theory and typography.

Our growing designers apply their skills by designing projects that they care about. Some of their projects include:

  • Logo design: Our students learn what makes a strong logo, how logos speak for brands, and how to create their own using concepts of design.
  • Mockups: Participants learn how to mold their designs into real-world settings, giving clients a clear vision of how the design will be applied in a tactile way.
  • Geometric Artwork: Part of Graphic Design is an artistic license. This can be the most fun part for our students, as they get to see their artistic skills in a dynamic way.

  • Gifs: Media and websites are becoming more interactive. GIFs are an easy and fun way to create interactivity with a website. With this project, students learn how gifs are used for digital marketing.
  • Web Design: Participants learn about user interaction and experience (UI/UX) by designing and building their own websites.

What we love about graphic design is that it helps our students who love art but don’t see themselves as coders find their passion + connection with tech. Graphic Design is a great tech skill to learn. There’s a variety of career options, industries to work in, and both creative + influential projects to create.

If you know a teen who’s interested in learning graphic design, visit southbendcodeschool.com, pick a date that works well for you, and design with us this fall!
