We’re excited to announce that we are working with the University of Notre Dame to put on a Web Development Coding Boot Camp, primarily targeting the university’s non-computer science majors! The boot camp is a part of the University’s Winter Session offerings, a series of engaging skills and career development opportunities that Notre Dame students can capitalize on during their winter break.

What is a boot camp?

Traditionally, coding boot camps are intensive training programs for software development. This course, in particular, is for students who have zero (or limited) prior coding/programming experience. During the boot camp, students will build web applications using JavaScript, databases, and utilizes API’s.

If you’ve been wondering how to break into the world of programming and get hands-on, practical experience building web applications as a non-computer science major this course is for you.

Students participating in this program will gain experience using tools and methods that are used in professional settings. They will also develop a portfolio of work that will adequately demonstrate the relevancy of their knowledge and skills to potential employers. This program will also be beneficial to students who are considering the further pursuit of knowledge in computer science and related fields of technology or are just curious about what coding is and want an opportunity to develop these professional skills.

Why did you choose web development?

Web development has become an exciting and versatile field. Technologies and tools have advanced to the point where anyone with enough fundamental knowledge can spin up a web app, launch it online, and share it with the world.

Although web development has a lot of hype, the barriers to entry can feel somewhat daunting to those approaching these technologies for the first time. Our mission is to make web development approachable and computer science a little less scary. In this course, we will demystify programming for the web, become acquainted with databases, and deploy web applications online.

This is a new opportunity for us and we’re excited!

South Bend Code School’s mission is to make computer science education equitable. We normally make strides towards equitable tech education by providing programming for ages 18 and younger in Indiana and Michigan. The opportunity to work with the University of Notre Dame to develop a course for their students and introduce more adult learners to computer science helps to provide a pathway for Notre Dame students who would consider computer science training but do not have enough knowledge about the field to determine whether or not the investment of time and money is worth the upside these skills provide.

The Department of Labor Statistics shows that the United States will need to fill 2.6 million STEM careers by 2024. This workforce shortage impacts every community, including ours. Employers in our region also recognize that there is a need for additional technology talent. The development of this boot camp is a start.

We’re excited to introduce more adult learners to computer science and get more qualified candidates into the pipeline. Our team of educators and professional software engineers are well versed in the industry and have the skills needed to improve our community’s technological literacy.
