“We broke down a few barriers today…”

Last week marked the end of South Bend Code School’s “Jumpstart Web Development” classes in South Bend and Fort Wayne — over 20 teenagers learned three coding languages and built social good web apps!

We follow each semester up by visiting a major tech company in Chicago, Google in this case. Past trips include 1817, Facebook, Civis Analytics, and Walgreens Innovation. It is common for our students to meet people at these companies who, just like them, began coding in middle or high school. It’s not hard to imagine how transformative this can be in the life of Rust Belt teens.

We documented the entire trip in a short film capturing students presenting their web apps to Googlers and downtown rooftop views. Watch it:

“The biggest secret about Code School is it’s not really about the code… it’s about the way you think, it’s caring about issues that affect people”

Almost one week after the trip Alex and I sat down to reflect on this latest tech trip for my podcast. Our conversation centered around Code Schools core mission of “eliminating the barriers between people, technology, and jobs” — leading us to discuss South Bend’s economy, creative culture, and more.
