Helena Torres CEO & Co founder at B-wom: “My dream is being able to have some positive impact on society and living with passion every single day”

B-wom is finalist at South Summit 2017 and its CEO & Co founder, Helena Torres, tell us how much the app can be useful for women. B-wom is a startup founded by women to women that promotes their self-care.

Why did you decide to start your business and how did you come up with the idea?

I’ve been in the entrepreneurship ecosystem since 2007, first as a very small inverstor, then, I lead with the entrepreneur team a startup that raised $28M. I’ve invested (small) in more than 9 companies during these last years (sold one, closed two), I’ve been mentor in serveral tech accelerators and I’m independent board director on a fund of funds. I’m always looking for opportunities. When I met my partner back in february 2015 she had the idea to do a fitness app for training the pelvic floor, I really loved the idea, but, not only for pelvic floor, but for the intimate health of the women, that was the way I saw we could really impact women’s lives and improve their health. So, on april 2015 we incorporated the company and in may we did our first Friends, Fools and Family round to start making B-wom big.

What does being an entrepreneur mean for you?

Being an entrepreneur means so many things: means following your dreams; means having no fear to fail; means creating something that can have an impact on society; means changing the status quo; means waking up everyday full of passion; means living on uncertainty; means having your project 24x7 on your mind; means having creative solutions to solve problems; means being surrounded of people sharing the same dream; means never giving up; means receiving a lot of “no” and even so, keep going; means enjoying every single minute of your day, with the good and not so good things, being an entrepreneur is a way of life.

Why your company is useful for the user?

B-wom is changing self-care for women, is changing the mindset on how a women has to treat and care about her body (we want to do with self-care and prevention something similar to what Headspace did with meditation, becoming meditation a mainstream movement, we thing self-care has to be a mainstream movement) We thing that self-care has to be integrated in our daily life, in our habits. As said before, we live longer, we have to live healthier or it won’t be affordable. We are empowering women with their body and educating them to prevent. Women that use our app, with few minutes a day (maximum 10) can improve their health or prevent it, on matters such as: urine leaks, sex pleasure, breast cancer, constipation, and other important things for women. The economic impact is huge: — Prevention and healthy Habits → less doctor visits — Early detection → less doctor visits, more posibility of cure — Combination of physical visits with B-wom → reduction of physical visits
