Planning a visit to Thailand? Well, you won’t be disappointed. For whichever region you decide to explore you are sure to be rewarded with a rich, and varied feast of cultural stimulation, mixed with stunning natural beauty, that has made Thailand the most popular tourist destination in this part of the world.

Thailand literally means ‘Land of the Free’ and it is easy to see why this is so suitable for a nation that is the only one in south-east Asia never to have been colonized by a foreign power. From the peaceful meditation of saffron-robed monks to the brutal national sport of Thai kickboxing, the freedom of expression in Thailand is all so apparent.

And the freedom to roam this most exotic of countries is something all travelers to Thailand can enjoy, and indeed anyone thinking of visiting should really consider spending a good few weeks here to really appreciate, and take in the unique diversity of the land because there are five distinct geographic regions that all have their own special reasons for visiting.

For instance, in the far south, there are the famous stretches of coastlines of white sands set against a verdant mountainous backdrop, with dozens of enchanting islands such as Phuket, and Phi Phi, and wonderful colorful coral reefs; a paradise location for catching the suns rays, snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing.

In contrast, in the far northern regions of Chiang Mai, and Isaan, things could not be more different. Generally a little cooler, there are no beaches up here as the land meets the borders of Laos, Burma, and Vietnam, with the rolling foothills of the Himalayas forming a spectacular backdrop in a quieter, greener, setting ideal for getting off the beaten track, and exploring the many ancient stone temples of Khmer, and savoring the cultural interests of ethnic diversity.

In central Thailand lies the nation’s capital city Bangkok where the senses will be continually pummelled by exciting colors, exotic smells, lavish, and ornate gilded temples, and palaces, floating markets on wistful Khlong (canals), and magnificent foods that will thrill the palate. A unique blend of old, and new, time spent in Bangkok is never dull in a busy, bustling, vibrant city.

And then into the east of Thailand, just a few hours from Bangkok, is the other main destination for sun-seeking, beach-loving visitors who come to enjoy the fabulous coastline that looks out onto the Gulf of Thailand. There are more islands to explore here, with some at the very eastern tip that was once hard to get to, and now make for a quieter, more secluded island paradise retreat. While further north in eastern Thailand there is the contrast again with green mountains, and tropical countryside bordering Cambodia.

The fifth region is Trat Province which lies at the very eastern corner separated from Cambodia by the Khao Banthat mountains. With over fifty large and small islands off Trat, masses of coral reefs, and acres of white sandy beaches it is not hard to see why this has become another popular destination for travelers in search of a taste of paradise.

With so much to see and enjoy wherever you are, if you are thinking of traveling to Thailand, make traveling in Thailand a must.
