Yet, a rare court decision shines a light of hope
In December 2023, Argentina elected far right-wing Javier Milei as president. Since then, as expected, the overall feeling has been a lack of direction on the country’s climate policies and commitments.
Because Milei doesn’t only dismiss scientific views on global warming but also has a dim view of environmental protection. For the new administration, climate change is a “socialist lie” to be understood as a natural, cyclical phenomenon with little to do with industrialization or human activity. The administration is also questioning the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
And so, in the corridors of the former environment ministry — now downgraded to an under-secretariat — climate change has become taboo. For real.
