Each year, California Hospital Medical Center’s annual Heart of the City 5k raises money to fund a specific need at the hospital. Last year’s event raised over $235,000 for the purchase of two mobile x-ray machines. This year, the dog friendly 5k and pancake breakfast will be held March 24.

South Park resident Cary Jones is a 2018 event Co-Chair. Cary has been involved in the 5k for five years. Snell and Wilmer, the Bunker Hill law firm where he is a Partner, has been a Corporate Cup participant and sponsor for three.

Cary, how did you get involved in the 5k?

My wife and I have lived in South Park for nine years. We have seen the exciting development and growth of our neighborhood since the opening of Ralph’s downtown in 2008. We formed a non-profit shortly after moving to South Park from Salt Lake City, and the mission of our non-profit is planting and maintaining gardens in Skid Row. We are also devoted Guerilla Gardeners. California Hospital Medical Center is a critical component to the sustainability of our City, and the Foundation’s support of Heart of the City is emblematic of the Hospital’s commitment to the “vibe” of South Park. In addition, the makeup of our Committee matches the diversity of our community, and the businesses we represent all benefit from CHMC’s strong presence in our community.

Does Snell and Wilmer’s participation in the Corporate Cup have an impact on your office culture?

Without a doubt. Everyone in our office gets up for the 5k and the festivities after the race. We even had dogs entered last year in the dog costume contest (we all lost to a dog in a Pope costume — go figure). The race generates a tremendous team spirit on our office.
