Braeden, Greg and Charlotte

As a newly single Dad, I moved to South Park in January 2011 with my then 4 year old daughter and 8 year old son, Charlotte and Braeden. I’d always wanted to live downtown and took advantage of the opportunity to begin a new adventure with my kids. I thought, “If they can raise kids in Manhattan, why not DTLA?!”

So we settled into our first loft in South Park because of the safety, cleanliness and close proximity to everything. We’ve since moved to a high rise just around the corner for more space and amenities. The kids joke that its like living in a hotel and their friends from all over the city love to come and visit.

Living downtown, we’ve traded our backyard for all the parks, recreation and entertainment options all around us. We’ve had birthday parties at Grand Hope Park, enjoyed movies at the Regal and performances at the STAPLES Center and Grammy Museum. I try relentlessly to expose them to cultural events on Bunker Hill, but admit that I usually have to bribe them with the promise of food trucks. With the nearby Pico Station, on a beautiful weekend day we can easily catch a train and ride our bikes on the beach.

I love seeing all of the young families downtown and have noticed a real surge in social and support groups. Sadly, many move away when the kids become of school age, as there simply aren’t many local options. Luckily, we discovered Downtown Magnets High School where my son is in his second year. They have a distinguished faculty and staff, diverse student population and cutting-edge curricula. It’s now getting much deserved recognition as one of the best magnet high schools in Los Angeles.

South Park has been a wonderful fit for me and my family. For every challenge, I’ve been rewarded watching the kids grow up in an exciting and diverse neighborhood. Everything they could want to experience is at our doorstep. As a Realtor for Compass, I’ve also been inspired by all of the development going on around us, and heel fortunate to work and sell in a community in which I’m so personally invested.
