Millennial space inspirations are broad and varied. A few millennials were inspired by the stories of Apollo and the history of the Space Age. Some millennials were inspired by NASA as children, aspiring to pursue their dream jobs in the space sector. And achieved their dreams they did.

Many millennials are inspired by NASA’s recent and current astronomy and planetary science missions. From the mysterious astrophysical phenomena captured by Hubble and other observatories, to the far traveling New Horizons and Voyager probes, to the glimpses of distant exoplanets, and everything in between, our views of the Universe capture our imaginations.

By far, the top inspiration for millennials has been the emergence of the commercial space industry and its super-star: SpaceX. With feats never before seen such as landing two rocket boosters back to the ground simultaneously, to public engaging showmanship such as launching a Falcon Heavy carrying a Tesla Roadster with a spacesuited mannequin playing David Bowie music, it’s no surprise SpaceX motivates and excites millennials entering and growing in their space careers.

Other private space ventures, from Blue Origin’s large ambitious to CubeSats’ small and accessible technology, make a big impact on the space sector and the minds of millennials. For many millennials, their ultimate goal is to better humanity. Some conclude that to make the world a better place, we need to go off world.

This is of an excerpt from the Chapter 1 of Rise of the Space Age Millennials by Laura Forczyk, an inspiring book featuring voices of space students and professionals born in the 1980s and 1990s.
