Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil,

The three wise monkeys are an iconic image. They even have their own emojis!

What do they mean by evil, though? What are we supposed to not see, hear, or speak?

Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean to cover your ears from mean words, avert your eyes from the suffering of the world, and never say anything mean. It is referring to anyone’s subjective idea of evil. However, it can cause a lot of internal conflicts to try and pin down your value of what is good or bad.

So I’m gonna swap in a temporary, practical definition for evil. That way we can understand what we are supposed to not see, hear, or speak.

That definition is the illusion of separation.

See, Hear, and Speak Inclusively

It is natural today to look for differences and divisions. This has certain practical uses but can be intensely stressful.

Not only do we have more in common with each other than we like to recognize, but we also have more in common with a variety of other species.

Even outside of mammals, where we share many physical functions, we have our brainstem and cerebellum as our reptilian brain, and our neuronal connections bear a striking resemblance to mycelial networks in mushrooms. You could make a long list, you’ve even got bacteria and cellular organisms at play.

Every life is made of the same basis of things like carbon and water.

I remember Neil DeGrasse Tyson explaining this science-based route very well.

Between us and our fellow humans, we tend to focus more on differences of thought, which extend to beliefs and values. These can still be recognized, but the similarities overwhelm them 10:1.

See — that we are all built the same way. If your next breath doesn’t happen, you will die the same as everyone else. If we fall from too high a height, we’re finished. We need to eat, use the bathroom, and drink water.

Hear — Everybody around you is speaking the same language for the most part, and evehey aren’t, they are talking about the same things. Everybody is using the same exact variety of tones on the emotional spectrum to speak from.

Speak — From the recognition of what you see and hear. You will find that there is ample information to be gathered.

This inclusive vision opens many doors.

Realize Your Connectedness

When people act, they act from the same places that you act. Everyone may have something different that triggers their anger, sadness, or happiness, but you are aware of how they must view that trigger if they are in that state.

You are aware of what someone must be going through physically when they are hungry or in pain.

There is no situation where you are not capable of fully understanding your environment so long as you are open to understanding yourself. Because you are only divided from it as an idea in your head.
