2020 is almost behind us, and despite the wild roller coaster it’s been, SpankChain is ending this clusterf*ck of a year on a high note. We’ve accomplished so much and we have even more to look forward to as a company, but we’re not the only ones finishing strong this year. 2020 was the year that proved crypto is here to stay, and the adult industry is thriving. So, without any further ado, here’s some good news to ring in the New Year.

COVID who?

It wouldn’t be an end of year recap without talking about the viral elephant in the room. COVID may have tried to raise hell, but the crypto and adult spaces didn’t only survive the challenges posed by the pandemic, they thrived despite them.

The adult industry was actually among the first to introduce a sweeping lockdown. Performers were told not to shoot until new cleaning, safety, and social distancing protocols were instituted to ensure production was safe. As it stands, every major production company requires performers and crew members to take a test for the virus every two days in order to participate in a shoot. Ever the source of levity in trying times, the industry even managed to bang out (ehem) a few COVID parodies during these unprecedented times.

As one might expect, traffic on porn sites witnessed increase during the first onslaught of global lock down measures. In Italy, Porn Hub’s traffic went up by a staggering 57%. This increase can only be attributed in part to the fact that the company made their Premium service free to the COVID-ravaged nation, since many other countries also experienced significant bumps in traffic.

Budding sex work platform OnlyFans also saw an uptick in creators (200k+ in April). Thanks to OnlyFans, performers were able to make their own content from the comfort of their own quarantined homes, and mainstream content creators followed suit. Bella Thorne, Cardi B, and Blac Chyna all flocked to the platform to sell their subscriptions. Beyonce even gave OnlyFans a shoutout in one of her songs.

Despite the various challenges and hurdles posed by the pandemic, it looks like adult biz came out on top in more ways than one.

Crypto so popular

Crypto cynics take note, 2020 proved that blockchain has what it takes to go mainstream and then some. Not only did internet payment juggernaut PayPal integrate the ability to buy crypto, we’ve seen a number of legit crypto-friendly debit cards popping up. Furthermore, now that Visa/MasterCard has cock-blocked adult (dumb move, bros), crypto is primed more than ever to become the preferred way to pay for adult content online.

SpankPay signups surged as the payment processors cut off Pornhub—sex workers are getting smart about using crypto for financial sovereignty and we love to see it!

Hindsight is 2020

When we started SpankChain three years ago, people mocked us for creating a “porncoin,” and adult companies didn’t take crypto seriously. Hate to say we told you so, but WE TOLD YOU SO. With the adult landscape up against some major shakeups, crypto has proven to be a stable foundation upon which the industry can build its future.

Platforms like Twitter and Reddit have proven to be incredibly lazy when it comes to moderating content on their respective sites. As a result, it is very possible that they will ban adult content all together, effectively discriminating against sex workers who operate ethically and legally. Porn production is changing too. Not only are platforms demanding content verification; more and more, models and performers are pushing to own their content (and the money they stand to earn from it).

“I felt a great disturbance in social media—as if millions of sex workers voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.” — Obi Porn Kenobi

These shakeups may signal a new future for the adult industry. It is quite possible that the era of free porn may be seeing its final days. Whether or not that proves to be the case, one thing is for sure: crypto will remain the least discriminatory and most anonymous way to pay for adult content online. Adult platforms take note: the time is now to start educating consumers and creators about the importance of financial sovereignty and the advantages of getting off the dollar. Don’t know where to start? We’re here to help.
