Our Investment in Haven

Making global freight procurement less expensive and more efficient.

In April 1956, a refitted oil tanker carried fifty-eight shipping containers from Newark to Houston. From that modest beginning, container shipping developed into a huge industry that made the boom in global trade possible. Today 90% of all physical goods in the world are shipped in a container, and most of those shipments are currently arranged by a middleman broker with a small network of relationships via email, phone, and fax. As a result, there are tremendous inefficiencies, resulting in unnecessary costs.

This is why I am delighted to announce that Spark Capital has led the Series A round of funding in Haven.

Haven applies modern technology and market dynamics to solve a huge headache for shippers and carriers. By creating an open platform, shippers can submit structured bids and quickly get easy-to-compare price quotes from a variety of carriers looking to fill excess capacity. Shippers don’t have to wait for a broker to call “their guy” and get a quote back anymore and carriers don’t get excluded from an opportunity to expand their business.

When talking about global freight the size of the market and amount of money being spent is staggering. Therefore lowering costs tends to be priority one, two, and three. Eliminating the need for proprietary relationships between brokers, shippers, and carriers can have a transformational impact on costs. On average, eliminating the middlemen saves 20% on freight costs for SMBs. For large shippers, like commodity traders, saving $1/metric ton translates to billions.

Haven is more than just a bidding platform. It’s a full featured, cloud based logistics control center with a beautifully-designed dashboard that gives shippers visibility into all of their shipments in real time. There’s no software to purchase or subscribe to, and no complex integrations or installations.

Of course having the right approach and product at the right time is not good enough without the right team. Actually, the thing that excited us most about Haven was the combination of CEO Matt Tillman’s experience building ad networks and COO Jeff Wehner's experience managing global supply chains at Nest and Apple. They have a shared vision and perfectly complementary skills given their product and operational backgrounds.

By eliminating barriers to trade, Haven gets the materials that build our houses and the food we eat to where we need it, with less friction and at lower cost. Simply put, Haven’s platform will have a transformational effect on global trade.

We couldn’t be more excited to work with Matt, Jeff and the whole Haven team!
