What if we switched to ecological and long-lasting packaging?

For the third edition of Solutions&Co, we have focused on circular economy. This new economic model breaks with the traditional pattern of linear production (produce, use, dispose), and redefines products and services to minimize both waste and other harmful outputs.

We’ve drawn up a list of 4 inspiring solutions responding to the climate, energy, environment issues, of among the 50 business solutions shared by 20 of the greatest international media from all over the world, reunited for the event. This is the case of the initiatives of TerraCycle, Post-conflict circular economy in Angola, Sistema Biobolsa and Namo E-waste.

* TerraCycle : One mission, eliminate the idea of waste!

TerraCycle, is eliminating the idea of waste by recycling the “non-recyclable”, whether it’s coffee capsules, pens or plastic gloves. The company partners with individual collectors as well as major consumer product companies, retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, and small businesses across 20 different countries. The company’s sales are expected to reach $20 million in 2016.

* POST-CONFLICT CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN ANGOLA : A new begining

Several decades of war has left Angola with many metal wrecks throughout the country. They now represent an opportunity to revive the steel industry, with projects that turn micro-entrepreneurs into trained and equipped scrap collectors and that feed the growing recycling facilities. This has created a virtuous circle of job creation, economic growth and cleaner lands!

* SISTEMA BIOBOLSA : When agriculture meet waste solutions

Social enterprise Sistema Biobolsa manufactures & distributes biodigesters to rural (often indigenous) groups in Mexico & 9 other countries. Their system transforms the manure of animals into biogas and natural fertilizer. So far, the company has installed more than 3,200 biodegestor reactors (priced between 5000 and 120 000 pesos — micro credit possible) and treated more than 4 million tons of waste.

* NAMO E-Waste : When agriculture meet waste solutions

The startup Namo E-Waste, created in 2014 has bagged the `Best Green Startup Award and `Refurbisher of the Year Award’ from Franchise India. The company is present in 12 states and handles 70% of e-waste generated in India. Collected E-waste is segregated, with usable products including laptops, air conditioners and refrigerators being refurbished and sold through dealers in smaller cities and towns at a fraction of the cost. The unusable waste is processed to extract metals etc which are then sold to foundries.
