According to ADEME, 1/5 of all the energy consumed in the world is renewable.

What if all humans had access to affordable and renewable energy?

For Impact Journalism Day, more than 50 newspapers from all over the world are publishing 60 stories of change! Among these, we drew up a list of 5 inspiring solutions responding to this issue. Discover a selection of these solutions to fight against hunger and find more sustainable agriculture like the initiatives of Kalasari, SolarPak & Gab by Light.

Kalisari — Indonesia

At the initiative of Indonesia’s Agency for the Assessment of Application of Technology (BPPT), wastewater from the tofu making process is now being used to generate biogas in Kalisari; offering the local population an affordable source of renewable energy and at the same time reducing the pollution of water sources and farmland from acidic tofu residues. More than 200 factories are taking part & renewable energy is being provided for over 500 homes.

SolarPak — Ivory Coast

A UN reports estimate that 700 million Africans do not have access to regular electricity, as soon as the sun goes down family life comes to a standstill, here including children and their schoolwork. Those wanting to study in the evening often have to use keratin lamps, which are incredibly hazardous, leading to both visual and respiratory problems. Solarpak is a waterproof backpack designed with a rechargeable and integrated solar panel and LED lamp, enabling children from poorer communities to study in the evenings.

Gab by light — Gabon

This company — founded by a young Gabonese woman entrepreneur — is specialised in providing portable solar appliances at affordable prices, for both homes & businesses. Gab by Light aims to bring clean energy to Gabon & its neighbouring countries. Winner of the ‘Prix Tremplin Gabon’ in 2016, the start-up has over 780 clients so far.
