I’d just arrived home from work, and my wife said, “Our daughter asked me, why don’t you and daddy hug anymore?”. I stood near the kitchen and dropped my bag on the ground as I heard, “I think we need to take a break”.

This is something that had been coming. Deep down, I knew that we weren’t a perfect couple. We were great parents and had made good strides as a financial partnership. But we weren’t very good at being together. Her words, delivered with resignation and all the emotions that arise from shared experiences and life made together, shook me to my core.

At that point, I moved out of the house, away from the constant presence of my two young children and my wife of over ten years, and into a caravan in my brother's backyard.

This was the start of the most challenging and most important part of my life.

If I was asked to consider where I would be in five years at that exact moment, I am not sure it would have been very positive. In fact, there were a heap of emotion-filled evening drives back to that caravan after spending time with the kids.
