Future of work : Decentralized workforce

The past few days there is a rise in the need to work-at-home and self-quarantine. Both of it requires significant amount of effort especially in terms of rigid discipline and a sense of responsibility. However, people are undoubtedly struggling to alter their behavior especially in terms of self -quarantine, despite the threat of a grave danger. Habits are damn hard to break — and this is pretty similar to someone trying to quit smoking or waking up early. Sure enough, there is a lot of internal brain/neuroscience that takes place. However, the recent threat is no easy feat and it doesn’t look like its going away soon unless we change our habits and co-operate to reduce the transmissions by altering our behaviors.

Later on, after some time once the COVID-19 has disappeared the face of earth — we will be yet again left with millions of workers with the same level of reluctance to return back to the centralized hierarchical office model. Even though the nature of work has evolved significantly in the past decade we haven't changed the way we work.

When me and my partner Suthaharan started up Sparkwinn Research — we made the conscious decision to experiment and practice remote work to some extent. We were open towards embracing decentralized work-space partly from the first day. We incorporated some level of remote work for our team of roughly 35+workers/freelancers. As a result of the existing systems in place our productivity hasn't been affected much by the recent turn of events.

Here are sum of the tips that we practiced to make remote work — work for our business and how it helped us to retain some level of normalcy despite the uncertain and volatile climate.

Shift in perception

We need a huge shift perception for this work at home model to work. Most of the startups rush towards seeking funding to build their fancy, dream office spaces. This is mainly because rich and cosy office stations are considered the ultimate definition of success.

We believe remote working culture is an ultra-smart move that has helped us to keep our costs low especially in an uncertain world. The key lies in placing value is in the work that we produce where we don’t waste more resources or expend more energy than its is required.

Hire Intelligently

We ensured that we have tonnes of rigid discipline and a sense of accountability/responsibility towards our work. Also we made it a point to only work with those who practiced the same set of values. Whenever, anyone in our team was not cut out for that kind of independence and accountability— we let them go.

The whole structure lies on this foundation without which it would collapse. Discipline and accountability are the key cornerstones of remote work.

Focus on Productivity and Value

For most of the service-oriented business it is not entirely necessary to be bound within the company’s walls or the 9 to 5 grind. It would turn into a loosing battle if organisations expected workers to sit in front from their laptops like they would at office. Most talented and highly-skilled employees expect some level of flexibility whenever remote work is concerned.
