We live in a hyper-globalized world that food on our plates arrives from diverse destinations around the world. In fact, the complex, interconnected trade and global operations help to feed the world. But with the new COVID-19 threat on the horizon, it becomes clearer that food that traveled ‘long-distance and multiple touchpoints’ is a cause for concern. Thus, challenging the global food supply chains as people start voting in favor of Local/national production. In such times when safety, health, and well-being are considered important — what can globalized food operators do to assure safety in terms of food production and distribution? Can globalized food systems still achieve economies of scale while ensuring food safety?
