Shi Ting Lee is a Ph.D. Student with a Masters in Crop Biotechnology, currently researching nanoscale biosensors. She is affiliated with the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science at the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus.

She was the winner of Sparrho’s Researcher Prize in May 2018 and won the jury over with her Pinboard on “New fluorogenic nanobiosensor for telomerase detection”. Sparrho supported Shi Ting’s trip to the 9th World Congress on Biosensors and Bioelectronics in Tokyo, Japan to the tune of £500.

Cool research: Shi Ting Lee’s research aims to develop a luminescent method to detect cancer cells. Modified DNA fragments “glow” silver in the beginning but this is turned off as soon as they react with active telomerase, such as those found in cancer cells. This method helps to distinguish cancer cells from normal cells within an hour and manufacturing of this luminescent probe cost less than a US dollar which aids patients’ accessibility to such affordable service.
