Ever thought about leaving academia? Have you thought aboutbecoming a data scientist? Last week we wrote about jobs in the data science field. Data science is a relatively new field and it is growing fast. Many companies from small startups such as Taplytics or Framed Data to large companies such as Deloitte and Google have begun recruiting PhD graduates to become data scientists.

They are looking for people with a very quantitative and logical mind to examine data and predict future trends and results, for which a PhD trains you well, but DJ Patil, who was once Chief Scientist at LinkedIn after having transitioned into data science from a researcher role at the University of Maryland, has the following advice for those of you looking to move from academia to data science in a business setting [ 1 ]:

“Data science is a team sport, somebody has to bring the data together, somebody has to move it, someone needs to analyse it, someone needs to be there to bounce ideas around.”

Similar to last week, we have found some examples of what is being offered right now if you want to have a quick look! In addition, register your email with us if you want more information regarding jobs here!

Our top picks for this week (7th — 11th March):
