Bursting to break in business, data science or entrepreneurship but don’t know where to start? The end of a PhD is an opportune time to investigate your options.

To expose yourself to sectors outside of academia, get yourself to a meet-up or conference. In the UK there are numerous well-run events that attract prominent speakers, and have open registration.

As a guide, we have compiled a list of some of the hottest conferences and symposia in the fields of data science, science and business, innovation, internet of things and entrepreneurship that are taking place in the UK over the next year. Take a look.

Science and Business

Science and Innovation 2017, 13th June 2017, London. From £250.

Held in the QEII Building in London, this conference sets to discuss how growth in the UK can be promoted through science and innovation. This year’s conference will discuss the new Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and will feature speakers from Innovate UK, the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and the UK Space Agency.

Business and Applied Sciences Academy of North America
(BAASANA) 2017 International Conference, 16–18 August 2017, Exeter, from £180.

BASANA is is an interdisciplinary, not for profit, professional association of business, sciences, and technology. Held this year in Exeter, their international conference is geared towards bringing together those with technical expertise to discuss how they can be used to address problems of the 21st century. If you are interested in using science to ‘do good’, this may be a good one to look into. Scholarly papers, abstracts, proposals for panel from all academic and applied disciplines in business, natural, social, behavioural sciences including fields of applied humanities such as journalism, mass communication, law and legal studies, educational administration health sciences, engineering and IT technologies are being invited for presentation at the conference.

The Business of Science Conference, 2018, Manchester. Tickets £125.

This year’s event has already passed, but make sure you don’t miss the 2018 edition if you are interested in the interaction of science and business. The conference includes exploring case studies of how science has been successfully commercialised. This event will also appeal to those with a particular interest in the economic growth of Manchester and the ‘north’.

Data science

Open Data Science Europe 2017, 12–14 October, London. From £169.

Open Data Science Europe market themselves as one of the largest applied data science conferences on the planet. This is a one-stop-shop for picking up new data science-related knowledge, skills and networking. A highlight is their training schools, taken by experts in their fields. The different focus segments at this year’s event will be Open Data Science, Machine Learning, Quant Finance and Open Visualisation. Get yourself in there before 23rd June for an early-bird discount.

Big Data London, 15–16 November, London, free.

Big Data London is a event to help businesses ‘join the data revolution’. While this may not seem instantly applicable to a PhD, it‘s bound to be a great place to network. In addition, it’s free! Previous speakers come from companies like IBM, Microsoft, Cloudera, Datalytyx, Elsevier, KPMG and University of Cambridge.

Entrepreneurship

The Europas, 13th June 2017, London. From £245.

Europas is a one day, action-packed event. The event features speakers from around the world, niche discussion groups, European founders and investors galore and an impressive awards dinner party. This year’s event is approaching quickly so check it out.

MADE Festival, 9th November 2017, Sheffield.
