What can 3 Million tweets tell us about the eclipse?

Well the eclipse has come and gone and throughout it all, social media was buzzing with activity. During the eclipse, we captured 3,277,625 tweets from the Twitter firehose. Here’s a quick summary of the story they told.

If you look closely at the map above, social media activity decreases while the moon is directly overhead. Seems that people were posting in anticipation of the eclipse as well as after it happened. During the eclipse however, people seemed to put down their phones to enjoy the moment IRL.

Next, let’s look at the position of posting relative to totality. Where did people post from while watching the eclipse?

Looks like most people were within a 50 mile range or so of totality. But what about enjoyment? Were people closer to totality having a better time during the eclipse?

Nope, looks like just about everybody was having a pretty good time during the eclipse.
