My mother and I have a teashop habit. Or we used to before the pandemic —no new story there. We would meet up Our favorite was a small tearoom in Plymouth, Michigan, called Sweet Afton. Not only did they serve your table tea in a myriad of delicate, floral patterned cups and saucers — a kitschy touch much preferred to the slick, modern monochrome mugs and teapots at other teashops — but they had really good food. It was tearoom fare, so keep that in mind, but soup and scone was always a good bet. Or a ploughman’s lunch. Or anything served with one of their cheddar muffins.

Okay, now I want a cheddar muffin.

Their soups changed everyday. There was often one that seemed vaguely familiar — a chicken noodle, or a broccoli cheddar — but the one I always ordered was the one where I couldn’t be certain I’d ever heard those ingredients combined together to make the name of the soup. Like their Spinach Chicken Parmesan Soup.
