Learning to live with Bipolar I has been quite the roller coaster ride. It took time to get this official diagnosis and for a time, I didn’t do much about it. But after three manic episodes where I went into psychosis, I began to see I needed to take charge of my life and well-being. Due to these manic episodes being quite frightening and traumatizing to my loved ones and myself, it was a major wake-up call to take action.

Unfortunately, doctors assumed I just had depression and didn’t notice the hypomania that was going on behind the scenes. But once those full-on manic episodes came forward, there was no longer any doubt that I have Bipolar I. Once this was made aware, medications were adjusted, which helped and I am grateful for those meds. In this article, I wish to convey tips I have learned from therapy, visiting over 10 hospitals/crisis units, and talking to doctors, psychiatrists, and nurses.
