Learn about machine learning and neural networks in 30 seconds
If you are a business leader with the question ā€œwhat is machine learning anyway?ā€, hereā€™s a snippet from a half day business briefing we offer for leaders wanting to have a plain-English understanding of machine learning and neural networks.

Business problem: predict house sale price given its size.

Steps:

  1. Plot house price and size on a chart
  2. Draw a ā€œbest fitā€ line, and tweak it until itā€™s as close as possible to all the points
  3. That tweaking is machine learning!
  4. The calculation used for the line is the predictor! Though not a very good one.
  5. Non-machine learning methods can only work with a handful of features to predict from, and the types of calculation that it can create perform. Not just lines like this example, or basic curves.
  6. The promise of neural networks is that you can use any number of features (sale date, location, and any number of others you want). Thousands of features are fine.
  7. The promise also is that you can work with any amount of data too. Hundreds of millions of rows are fine.
