I think it’s important for everyone to remember that LGBT musicians exist outside of disco and indie pop. Even in the suspicious corners of satirical punk rock, alternative country, and seagull nests we have queer artists and themes. Here are some of my favorite examples.

take ecstasy with me, magnetic fields

you had a black snowmobile/we drove out under the northern lights/a vodka bottle gave you those raccoon eyes/we got beat up just for holding hands

rebel rebel, david bowie

you’ve got your mother in a whirl/she’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl

josephine, terrorvision

he had a restless soul/and something on his mind

pink triangle, weezer

i’m dumb she’s a lesbian/i thought i had found the one/we were good as married in my mind/but married in my mind’s no good

methodist coloring book, dead milkmen

you’ve got a methodist coloring book/and you color really well/but don’t color outside the lines/or God will send you to hell

follow your arrow, kacey musgraves

make lots of noise/kiss lots of boys/or kiss lots of girls

lesbian seagull, tom wilson

you and i/we can make it if we try/our love will keep us flyin’ high

candy says, the velvet underground

candy says i’ve come to hate my body/and all that it requires in this world
