This week’s session formed two distinct parts, about Bloomberg Professional and Eventus via WRDS.

Interpreting a Bloomberg financial market search request

We received a request to retrieve several charts from Bloomberg which will be used in undergraduate teaching. In today’s session, we worked through the request to understand the following:

  • What language is being used in the request, what are the names of the equities, currencies and indices? When is there a difference between common names and formal names?
  • How can we find the correct tickers for each of these series?
  • Which function should we use? How do we use Line Chart (GP) effectively and efficiently? (Choosing dates/frequency, removing unwanted series, exporting the image by copying to the clipboard.)
  • Why might these charts be useful, what will they allow the students to do, what research questions might they ask?

We also learned of a way to add automatically related data to a chart, for example, the index and peers of the selected company.

Understanding how to teach Eventus for US market event studies

We worked though the draft for our refreshed, rewritten online resource to teach people how to prepare to use Eventus and how to convert the results. We focused on the introduction section which explains the context for what an event study is and why someone would run one, information which is missing from the current/old resource:

The old resource is due to be replaced in the next eight weeks though the link to it will remain (hidden), as does the even older resource.

(After the new resource is complete and published, I shall come back and include a link to it here.)

Homework

  1. Sign up to assist upcoming workshops on Bloomberg and Datastream if you haven’t already, and practice running through the workshop plans.
  2. Help with the quality assurance of the new Eventus post.
