Getting started with searching Fame

In this post we will introduce you to Fame business database for researching companies in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

Introduction

Fame is a database of information on companies in the United Kingdom (UK)and Republic of Ireland. Fame includes information relating to companies, directors and research. University of Manchester students can use Fame to search for individual or groups of companies, companies with specific profiles, and for carrying out analysis on your results.

Fame can help you to:

  • Find companies in UK and Republic of Ireland which match a set of criteria or profile such as size, industry or location.
  • Compile a detailed picture of a company that includes directors and research.
  • Retrieve company news.
  • Export your results for analysis.

Fame also includes information on 6 million companies that are no longer active.

Accessing Fame

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Navigate to Library Website in your browser.
  2. Hover over the ‘Search resources’ tab.
  3. Next click ‘Search databases’ from the options in the second column.
  4. Use the search box to search for ‘Fame’ or select the ‘F’ icon underneath it.
  5. Select ‘Fame’ from the list that is displayed.
  6. The Library record will now be displayed, under the section titled ‘Find Online’ select ‘Fame’.
  7. The database will now open in a new window.

Searching for a specific company

To carry out a basic search for a company watch the video below, or follow the step-by-step instructions below it:

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Type the company name into the quick search bar at the top of the screen. You can add a comma followed by a country name to narrow down the results.
  2. Select the company by clicking on it from the results list, or click ‘Select all search results’ at the bottom of the list.

Company not found?

If the company is not found, try scrolling the results to search for an identifier or try searching on different search criteria. You will now be shown key information such as ownership, turnover and date of incorporation.

3. If this isn’t your first search you may be presented with an extra step prompting you to either confirm this is a new search or add it to your existing search. If this is a new search, leave the setting as ‘Replace your current search with this result’ and click ‘OK’.

3. Once you have selected the company you will be shown more detailed information about it.

4. Company information is presented in two ways. Firstly books consisting of chapters which include information such as contact details. Secondly financial worksheets which contain financial information in a spreadsheet format. Click the small arrow next to ‘Complete book’ on the left to switch between data view options.

Searching for companies based on multiple criteria

You can search for companies meeting certain criteria or exclude them based on different criteria, allowing you to create more complex searches for multiple companies. To find out how watch the video below, or follow the step by step instructions below it:

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Click the search icon in the navigation bar on the left, the search page will now be displayed.
  2. Any existing searches will be displayed at the top of the page. To start a new search click the ‘Start again’ button next to the search bar and again select ‘Start again’ from the pop up window to confirm(shown in below screenshot).

3. Click the tab named ‘Add a search step’.

4. A list of options will be displayed for you to search on such as Company, Identifiers and Location. Select the item you would like to search for.

Note: You can also click the arrow on the left of a search category to reveal sub categories.

5. From the column on the right select the relevant criteria to search.

Note: Some criteria may prompt you to enter further detail or parameters. For example a search for ‘Number of employees’ will allow you to enter a minimum and or maximum number among other options.

7. Click ‘OK’ to add the search step to your overall search.

8. Finally click ‘View Results’ displayed at the bottom of your search steps on the right.

Your search and the steps will now be broken down for you on the search screen, including the number of companies found matching your search.

Modifying your search

After carrying out your search the search results screen will be displayed. This also shows you a list of all the steps used in your search. You can modify your search by combining different search steps or even delete certain search steps. See how it different combinations affect the number of results the number of results.

  • To delete a step click the ‘X’ icon on the far left of any step.

  • To remove a search step without deleting it, untick the selection box to the left of the step.
  • At the bottom of you search steps there will be a line named ‘Boolean search’: which gives you a summary of the steps included actively in your overall search.

Searching for company subsidiaries

Fame includes information on company subsidiaries in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Follow the steps below to retrieve this information for an individual company.

For an individual company

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Type the company name into the quick search bar at the top of the screen. You can add a comma followed by a country name to narrow down the results.
  2. Select the company from the results list.

Note: Remember any previous searches will be displayed at the top of the page. To start a new search click the ‘Start again’ button next to the search bar and again select ‘Start again’ from the pop up window to confirm.

3. Once selected, you will now be shown more detailed information about the company. Including a summary of subsidiary information in the box titled ‘Ownership data’.

4. Select ‘More >’ from the bottom right of the ‘Ownership data’ box.

Export information for further analysis

When you have found what you were looking for you can export the results in a range of formats, for example:

  • Lists of results can be exported as Excel files.
  • Reports can be exported as PDF or Word files.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. After you have carried out your search and clicked ‘View Results’, further buttons will be displayed above your results. (Follow the steps in this section.) Click the button marked ‘Actions’ as shown on the screenshot below:

2. Select ‘Export company’ or ‘Export companies’ for multiple step searches, from the Actions menu. The Exports dialog will be displayed.

3. Select the export format.

4. Type in a name for file.

5. Select the content you want to export, either the current chapter or all chapters in the book of your choice.

6. Select which companies to include.

7. You can select the check box if you want to receive an email of your export.

8. Click the ‘Export’ button and your export will begin to download automatically.
