Innovators of the Week: Lucas and Rodrigo

The following post was written by Lucas and Rodrigo, two Special Olympics youth leaders from Argentina. The pair make it their mission to strengthen inclusion in their community. Check out how they #innovateforinclusion!

La siguiente publicación fue escrita por Lucas y Rodrigo, dos jóvenes líderes de Olimpiadas Especiales Argentina. Esta pareja ha tomado como misión fortalecer la inclusión en su comunidad. ¡Ven y conoce como ellos #InnovanPorLaInclusión!

My name is Lucas Lantz. I have been volunteering for Special Olympics Argentina for 7 years. I currently teach at Colegio San Juan XXIII high school and used to be a student there. The first time I collaborated in an event was also my first experience with individuals with intellectual disabilities. I remember feeling like a new world had opened up to me after going through my first Special Olympics training. I discovered something exciting without even realizing it at the time. I became more and more involved. I was very fortunate to belong, first as a student and then as a teacher, to an institution with a great spirit of solidarity. Since we began working with Special Olympics, the commitment of those with and without intellectual disabilities has grown.

Mi nombre es Lucas Lantz. He sido voluntario de Olimpiadas Especiales Argentina por 7 años. Actualmente enseño en la escuela secundaria Colegio San Juan XXIII, en donde solía ser estudiante. La primera vez que colaboré en un evento fue también mi primera experiencia con individuos con discapacidad intelectual. Recuerdo sentir como se abría un mundo nuevo ante mí, luego de ir a mi primer entrenamiento de Olimpiadas Especiales. No me dí cuenta en su momento, pero descubrí algo extraordinario. Me involucré cada vez más. Tuve la fortuna de pertenecer, primero como estudiante y luego como profesor, a una institución con un gran espíritu de solidaridad. Desde que comenzamos a trabajar con Olimpiadas Especiales, el compromiso de aquellos con y sin discapacidad intelectual ha aumentado.

After my graduation as a student, I served an accompanying role as preceptor to other student volunteers. I was living in the world of Special Olympics from an even deeper and more committed place. I had the privilege of watching the students feel the same commitment and happiness that I felt while participating.

Luego de graduarme como estudiante, ejercí como tutor a otros estudiantes voluntarios. Estaba viviendo en el mundo de Olimpiadas Especiales desde un lugar más profundo y comprometido. Tuve el privilegio de ver a los estudiantes sentir el mismo compromiso y felicidad que yo sentí mientras participaba.

I have always felt that young people have a lot of potential in these types of activities. They just need the right motivation that makes them feel useful. I wanted to show the athletes that they are capable of giving the best of themselves.

Siempre he sentido que los jóvenes tienen muchísimo potencial para este tipo de actividades. Sólo requieren la motivación adecuada, que les haga sentir útiles. Quise mostrarles a los atletas que ellos son capaces de dar lo mejor de ellos mismos.

In the activities I participated in (tournaments, science fairs), I had the opportunity to meet many athletes of Special Olympics Argentina. One athlete was Rodrigo, who participated in swimming events. We began to communicate through social networks and eventually began to see each other while participating in different activities in our community. Over time, I began to support him in his training and competitions. I admire the great swimmer that he is! More than anything, we began to participate in Special Olympics together in training and workshops.

En las actividades en las que participé (torneos, ferias de ciencia), tuve la oportunidad de conocer a muchos atletas de Olimpiadas Especiales Argentina. Uno de los atletas era Rodrigo, quién participaba en eventos de natación. Comenzamos a comunicarnos por redes sociales y eventualmente comenzamos a vernos mientras participábamos en diferentes actividades dentro de nuestra comunidad. Luego de un tiempo, comencé a apoyarlo en sus entrenamientos y competencias. ¡Admiro que gran nadador es! Comenzamos a participar en Olimpiadas Especiales juntos, en entrenamientos y talleres.

When I was offered to be part of the team responsible for the First Inclusive Youth Forum, I got really excited. I was being given the opportunity to get other students and schools involved. My hope was that they could experience the happiness of engaging in transformative work for the people who need it the most and who deserve recognition and admiration.

Cuando me ofrecieron ser parte del equipo responsable del primer Foro de Juventud Inclusiva, me emocioné muchísimo. Se me estaba dando la oportunidad de involucrar a otras escuelas y estudiantes. Mi esperanza era que ellos pudieran sentir esa felicidad que trae participar en la labor transformadora en beneficio de las personas que más lo necesitan, y que merecen reconocimiento y admiración.

Almost 350 young people were invited to train and participate in different activities. Some of the activities included an athletics tournament, a unified show of the Young Athletes program, a science fair, and a youth forum. The main activity, the Inclusive Youth Forum, brought 77 young people with and without intellectual disabilities together from 4 special and general educational institutions. At the forum, we held a film debate with the film “El Farsante”. We also presented proposals and projects to promote the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. These proposals and projects will be developed during the next year.

Casi 350 jóvenes fueron invitados a entrenar y participar en diferentes actividades. Algunas de ellas incluyeron un torneo de atletismo, una demostración unificada del programa Atletas Jóvenes, una feria de ciencias, y un foro de juventud. La actividad principal, el Foro de Juventud Inclusiva, reunió a 77 jóvenes con y sin discapacidad intelectual, provenientes de 4 instituciones educativas generales y especiales. En el foro, organizamos un debate con la película “El Farsante”. También presentamos propuestos y proyectos para promover la inclusión social de personas con discapacidad intelectual. Las propuestas y proyectos se estarán desarrollando durante el próximo año.

The commitment and involvement of the youth was incredible. One of the most exciting things was hearing from young people with intellectual disabilities about some of their struggles, needs, and dreams. We all agreed that we must work together for the inclusion of these athletes and give them the rights they deserve that are often denied.

El compromiso e involucramiento de la juventud fue increíble. Una de las cosas más emocionantes fue escuchar de jóvenes con discapacidad intelectual sobre algunos de sus luchas, necesidades y sueños. Todos estuvimos de acuerdo con que debemos trabajar juntos para la inclusión de estos atletas y darles los derechos que se merecen y que a menudo se les niegan.

Rodrigo and I form a good team and understand each other well. We both agree that this experience was one of the best of our lives and that we want to continue working together and developing our relationship. The two of us have a lot to learn from each other. The experience of being part of Special Olympics as a volunteer and leader has transformed me. I now hope to become a physical education teacher and continue to make this world a better place.

Rodrigo y yo formamos un buen equipo y nos entendemos bien el uno al otro. Ambos estamos de acuerdo con que esta experiencia fue una de las mejores de nuestras vidas, y que queremos continuar trabajando juntos y desarrollando nuestra relación. Los dos tenemos mucho que aprender el uno del otro. La experiencia de ser parte de Olimpiadas Especiales como voluntario y líder me ha transformado. Ahora espero ser un profesor de educación física y continuar haciendo de este mundo un mejor lugar.
