Special Olympics Ghana hosted QualityRights training for Special Olympics coaches this month, from 1-5 May, 2019. Through a combination of interactive face-to-face training and e-training online, over 100 coaches were sensitized.

Special Olympics Ghana national director, Phyllis Biney, worked in collaboration with Basic Needs and Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), who are both partnering NGOs in the Ghana Quality Rights implementing committee to facilitate the training.

Trained coaches came from different regions, including rural
areas. Through this training, they gained skills to protect and fulfill
the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities throughout
Ghana.

One of the trainees, Belinda Bukari, Unit Head for
Intellectual Disability and Special Education Division at Ghana
Education Services in Accra, emphasized that QualityRights
training has equipped her to rightfully speak for inclusion of
children with ID in the mainstream schools. She has also
mentioned the importance of using her office to encourage
training of teachers in Quality Rights.

Coaches were pleased to receive in depth understanding of the health rights of athletes and to use their knowledge to advise their communities about QualityRights in the care of persons with intellectual disabilities.

The power of sports

Special Olympics Ghana showcased the uniqueness of their face to face training by incorporating physical exercise and sports for all trainees, to highlight the importance of fitness as part of healthy living.

Another highlight of the event was when one of the coaches, Gabriel Kwasi Nkpaiwase, who as not in the face to face training session, presented a certificate of completion of the online modules within 24 hours after the sensitization session. He was dubbed the record holder of QR fastest learner in Ghana.

To facilitate further training effectively, Special Olympics Ghana received a computer and internet supply from Quality Rights Ghana to enable more health workers, teachers, and coaches who do not have internet access to visit the Special Olympics offices and do their training there.

The tool will also be used to register more people on the e-training platform during the sensitization sessions that will occur at every official event organized by Special Olympics Ghana.

The Program aims to facilitate training of over 500 people by the end of 2019. The overall Quality Rights program will train 50000 people in Ghana by 2021, through numerous partnering NGOs and the Mental Health Authority of Ghana.
