Friends:

I’d encourage you to take the time to read this story, which appeared in Saturday’s New York Times.

The story details the legal claims that are being made by people with intellectual disabilities and other conditions who were forcibly sterilized by the State of North Carolina decades ago and are now finding their voices and their anger. It’s a lesson in history but also in the stubborn and vicious discrimination that our athletes and their families face.

While this pernicious discrimination may come in a different and perhaps a more subtle form today, it still weighs down their hopes and dreams. And at least in my case, it makes me want to work even harder to bring our message of hope and possibility to the world.
