Hopi Stories: A Journey Through Four Worlds

The Hopi people of Arizona have creation stories that explain their worldview and connection to the land. These involve multiple worlds and describe how the Hopi emerged into the current Fourth World.
The world has gone through four distinct stages, each one building upon the last. These stages are called “worlds” in Hopi tradition. The story of these worlds forms the backbone of Hopi creation mythology.
In the beginning, there was Tawa, the Sun Spirit. Tawa created his nephew, Sotuknang, to form the nine universes. One for Tawa, one for Sotuknang, and seven others for life to come. Sotuknang then created Spider Woman, who served as a messenger in the creation process.
The First World, known as Tokpela or Endless Space, was inhabited by insect-like creatures. These beings lived in dark caves and weren’t happy. Tawa decided it was time for a change and sent Spider Woman to guide them to a new world.
