To give you a bit of insight into the Operations & Corporate team at MatchMove as well as how to break into a FinTech career, we asked Leow Hsueh Huah (“HH”), our co-founder and Chief Operations Officer, to share his insights.
HH is a man of decisive action and few words. We helped translate what he said into what he meant, for your reading pleasure.
Tell us a bit about your background and what you do at MatchMove.
What he said: I am the Group COO of MatchMove and run operations and corporate matters.
What he meant: I have extensive experience running huge organisations to achieve measurable and definitive results with broad impacts on peoples from all parts of society. While a FinTech is a very different place — smaller teams, smaller budgets — the mission is just as huge and wide-ranging. I am the co-founder of MatchMove and have been part of its growth and transformation from an entertainment company into a FinTech.
How did you find yourself in the FinTech space and what big opportunities do you see for FinTech in general?
What he said: MatchMove transitioned to Fintech as part of our pain points in our earlier games days.
What he meant: Being a co-founder of MatchMove from the very beginning, I moved into FinTech along with the company when we realised the gap between what people wanted to manage their finances and what they could actually get. When we pivoted into FinTech, we saw that up to 97% of people in South & Southeast Asia couldn’t get a credit card. Without those magical 16 numbers on the card, they were effectively excluded from the new and growing digital economy, including online shopping, education, and so much more. We are proud to be part of the movement to bring financial inclusion to everyone, everywhere.
What’s next for realising the MatchMove dream of putting A Bank in Any App?
What he said: Global expansion.
What he meant: We spent the last few years developing an award winning and patented Banking-as-a-Service and embedded finance platform. We battle tested it in some of the most complex and competitive markets in South & Southeast Asia, and we have proven that it is ready for global use. Now, we are focusing on expansion across Asia Pacific and, soon, the Global South and beyond.
Can you share some advice for someone who wants to break into FinTech?
What he said: Try it.
What he meant: FinTech is a new field, combining finance and technology to deliver something the world doesn’t know it needs — yet. The best way to start in FinTech is to learn the basics of business, find a gap between what people need and what they can get, and get started.
