Spherity leads the Gaia-X Identity and Trust group to accelerate the Energy Transition in Europe
Spherity supports the interoperability and portability of data for a future data exchange model in the European energy market
Gaia-X is a project initiated by Europe for Europe and beyond. Gaia-X is creating a proposal for the next generation of a European data infrastructure: a secure, federated system that meets the highest standards of digital sovereignty while promoting innovation.
The “energy data-X” consortium has been qualified as one of the 16 winning consortia for the next step in the Gaia-X funding competition. The core principle of the consortium is to build a secure data space for the energy industry that enables secure and sovereign data use and establishes a foundation for innovative business models. Spherity leads the Identity and Trust group to build an infrastructure for a future data exchange model in the European energy market. Establishing a large and comprehensive energy data space enables interoperability and portability of data and data-driven applications within and across various sectors.
The “energy data-x” project aims to build a prototype data space for the energy industry within the European Energy and Climate Policy frame. This enables secure and sovereign data usage while enabling data-based business models for market partners. Four focal points will be central within the project in the upcoming years:
- AI technologies will be used to utilize data for grid operation processes such as power and load flow forecasts.
- Algorithms for preventive maintenance and plant availability forecasts will be optimized based on plant and operating data.
- Smart meter gateways are being further developed at the endpoints of the energy system to communicate sensor data as an edge device in a star-shaped manner in the Gaia-X data space.
- New approaches to the realization of market communication should enable more time synchronization, efficiency, and transparency.
The project consists of 15 strong energy ecosystem partners contributing to data-driven innovations that also support European energy and climate policy goals. The four transmission system operators 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, and TransnetBW, as well as the distribution system operator Energienetze Mittelrhein, are participating as consortium partners from the grid sector. ARGE Netz covers the subject area of plant operation. With PPC, SAP, and Spherity, three technology experts are on board. The Fraunhofer Institutes IEE and IOSB-AST cover the research area.
The distribution grid operators E.ON and enercity Netz, Steag and Viessmann in the area of plant operation, and the International Data Spaces Association for networking with other European Data Spaces are represented in the consortium as associated partners.
