The Importance of Monitoring Backlinks and Tips to Generate More

You are probably thinking, what is a backlink and why should I care?

According to Wikipedia, “a backlink is a reference comparable to a citation. The quantity and sources of backlinks for a web page are among the factors that Google’s PageRank algorithm evaluates in order to estimate how important the page is.” In other words, if you want your website to have a high ranking, you need as many links as possible to lead back to your own website from other sites.

Sounds overwhelming, I know, but don’t despair; I will show you the ropes.

First of all, you need to see — and monitor — how many backlinks you have. You can easily do this with tools like Linkody or Moz (two of my favorites). Go to one of these sites, enter your website domain name in the search field, and find out how many backlinks you have. It is possible you will not recognize some of them, and ones you may have expected to see might not be listed. It is very important to keep a close eye on this, because it will help you improve.

If you see your number of backlinks are low, you need to take action. There are several ways to generate backlinks. This article, 42 Hacks to Score White Hat Backlinks for an Online Business in 2017, is a great resource outlining how to do this.

Below are five of my favorite strategies:

  • Have a guest blog
  • List yourself in free directories
  • Write testimonials
  • Create case studies
  • Participate in different communities
